The closet in our nursery was kinda…well…blah. Only one long shelf and hanging rod across the back wall and some small shelves on the side. We took the opportunity to give it a makeover while creating our Colorful Nursery for Trent.
The first step was to remove the long shelf and hanging rod.
We then painted the wall the same color as the rest of the nursery, Benjamin Moore Gray Horse.
We kept the small side shelves since they’ll provide extra storage room without getting the way.
We also added a light fixture. A sleeker light fixture from IKEA.
We purchased the IKEA Expedit 5×1 shelf in white and placed it upright in the center of the closet and nailed it to the wall.
Brett installed another long shelf above the center IKEA shelf. He then took two long white metal rods, cut them in half and inserted two on each side of the center IKEA shelf.
We added some bins to the center IKEA shelf and a shoe insert to the bottom.
Before Brett could say “Ta-Da!” I filled it with diapers and lots of clothes!
Waaay more storage space and more room for clothes!

Hi there! I’m wondering if you did anything special to attach the closet rod the Expedit? We are tackling this project right now and I’m afraid my husband is over-engineering that part
The little half cup things (quite the technical term, huh?) that hold the closet rod up have a single screw hole in them and that one screw is going into the side of the Expedit. Let me know if you have any more questions - I’d be glad to help!
This looks amazing! I will attempt to redo in our soon-to-be nursery! Thanks for the easy idea! How did you secure the top shelf, looks like it’s resting on some kind of moulding? Or maybe that’s part of the shelf, I can’t really tell. Thanks!
Thanks! Yes, that is molding on the way, plus it is resting on the IKEA shelf in the center. I hope yours turns out great!
Hi! I love this closet!! I am in the process of redoing my nursery closet and want to do something similar…. Could you send me the link to the ikea shelf please… I can’t seem to find the one you used!! Thanks!!
I just tried to look online and I don’t see it any more. Here is the only Expedit shelving unit I found: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50147735/ But when we were in IKEA last, we still saws bunch of them, so maybe they aren’t online any longer. Sorry!
Actually, I just saw they replaced the Expedit series with the Kallax series: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90275844/#/00275848
We are in the process of redoing our nursery closet as well. We have the Expedit shelf, but I was wondering where you got the long white shelf that runs across the top. Looks great!
Thanks! That shelf is just a white piece of wood from either Home Depot or Lowe’s.
I love this idea and I am actually beginning this in a few rooms in our house. Where did you find the shoe inserts?
Thanks
Those were at IKEA!
where did you find the blue bins?
They are from the Martha Stewart Collection at either Home Depot or Lowes.
